The Holy Child School Pig Farm (Sustenance Farm) aims to provide nutritious meals for students and create a sustainable source of income for the school through pig rearing and sales. The project is supported by HOPSA USA-Canada in collaboration with partners in Ghana.

HOPSAN Support
HOPSA ’74 North America donated $1,900 in celebration of their 50th anniversary for the purchase of 10 weaners (young pigs) and their feed for the school’s pig sty.
In October 2023, the project received its first installment of GHC 100,000 from donors. An account was opened by Sister Lawrencia (HOPSA 1976) to manage these funds.
HOPSA USA-Canada committed to covering feeding and maintenance for the first six months after completion (approximately $5,000), after which the school would assume full responsibility and reinvest profits into sustaining the farm.
Timeline of Key Events
July 2023: The farm project was scheduled to begin on August 1st, 2023.
HOPSA USA-Canada agreed to fund feeding and maintenance for the first six months before transitioning management fully to the school.
October 2023: The first GHC 100,000 was received for the project. Construction and setup began under the supervision of local partners.
June 2024: A total of 12 pigs (2 males and 10 females) were acquired. Breeding activities began.
September 2024: 8 out of 10 breeding sows were successfully mated, with the remaining two scheduled soon after.
The first sow was expected to farrow (give birth) by October 3rd, 2024, followed by others through December 31st, 2024.
An estimated 60 piglets were expected by the end of 2024.
December 2024
Third sow farrowed (gave birth) to 10 piglets on November 26, 2024.
Progress Through July 2025
The project started with 20 pigs and reached 120 pigs by July 2025.
Under the project terms, the pig sty was handed over to Holy Child School, which now manages day-to-day operations and benefits from farm proceeds.
The Ministry of Agriculture requires the return of 32 pigs (the original 10 plus 22 additional) to support other schools.
HOPSA USA-Canada’s role is now administrative, focused on oversight and documentation.
